Victor Alexander
Director, Ruth Page School of Dance
Afro-Cuban, Modern
Victor Alexander’s journey began at the prestigious Escuela Nacional de Arte in Havana, Cuba, where he trained, grew, and rose to the rank of principal dancer with Danza Contemporánea de Cuba, performing globally and gaining national prominence for his technical ability and expressive dance style.

Since relocating to Chicago in 2022, Victor has spent more than a decade with various prominent dance companies, including Luna Negra Dance Theater, Lyric Opera of Chicago, and Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. After establishing himself as a sought-after dance teacher and mentor, Victor joined ruth Page Center as the Director of Ruth Page School of Dance (RPSD) in 2013.  

During his tenure, he launched the RPSD summer intensive program, now known as International Dance Experience, expanded the RPSD’s international collaborations, and started its first professional dance training program. His accolades include being named one of Dance Magazine’s  “25 to Watch” in 2013 and receiving the Hedwig Dance Leadership Award in 2022. 2025, he was recognized with the Ruth Page Award. Victor’s experience and dedication to his craft continue to inspire and uplift everyone around him. His contributions to Ruth Page School of Dance and the broader dance community are truly remarkable.
Dolores Long

Mrs. Long’s professional career began as a teen with the Lyric Opera of Chicago. She started in the Corps de Ballet and left as a Principal Dancer. She danced principal roles with every Ruth Page company from 1954 to 1973. She also danced in Ruth Page and Chicago Tribune production of Ruth Page’s The Nutcracker as the American Beauty Rose and Sugar Plum Fairy for many years. Because of her lifetime connection to Ruth Page, Mrs. Long has been associated with the world’s greatest dancers, choreographers, producers and designers. Upon her retirement from dancing, she co-founded the Ruth Page Foundation School of Dance in 1971, and still teaches at the school. She has been the teacher and mentor for many professional dancers throughout her teaching career.
Birute Barodicaite

Ms. Barodicaite trained in Chicago with Richard Ellis, Christine DuBoulay, Larry Long, and Ben Stevenson. Ms. Barodicaite danced with the Chicago Ballet, touring throughout France, Austria and Germany. Ms. Barodicaite has staged Ruth Page’s The Nutcracker for Chicago Ballet, Con Spirito by Jim Clouser for Chicago Ballet, and Anton Dolin’s Pas de Quatre and Napoli for Ruth Page School of Dance.

In addition to teaching for the Ruth Page School of Dance for many years, she has taught in Lithuania for Lithuanian National Ballet, Ballet Moscow in Idaho and Chattanooga Ballet. In Chicago, she was on teaching faculty at Lou Conte Dance Studio, is currently on faculty with Chicago Movement Collective, and has taught company ballet classes for Hubbard Street Dance Chicago and Luna Negra Dance Theater. She has served as the rehearsal director and ballet mistress for the Ruth Page Civic Ballet and has been a guest teacher for the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater and Grand Rapids Ballet. Ms. Barodicaite has also been invited as a guest teacher at Escuela Nacional de Ballet de Cuba, in Havana.
Randy Newsom
Master Teacher

Randall Newsom was a soloist and principal character artist with the Irish National Ballet. In America, he performed with the Louisville Ballet and the Repertory Dance Company of the Southwest. Other engagements include being the principal male dancer in the English premiere of Leonard Bernstein’s MASS at the Royal Albert Hall in London. As a member and Co-Artistic Director of Cycles Dance Company, a modern dance troupe that toured the British Isles extensively, he received a special invitation to perform solo works at the Edinburgh Festival. Mr. Newsom trained at the Rotterdamse Dansacademie (Rotterdam Conservatorium) in Holland and the London School of Contemporary Dance.

He is a certified Benesh Movement Notator and stages the standard Classical and Romantic Ballet repertoire for regional companies throughout America. Randall was featured in a documentary by the CBC/Toronto about the process of ballet notation. After retiring from the stage, Mr. Newsom was Head of the Dance Program at Northern Illinois University for 30 years, and is still a professor emeritus for the school of theater and dance. He was also on the faculty of Salt Creek Ballet for 20 years. After moving to Chicago, Mr. Newsom taught at Loyola University for six years. Mr. Randy has been a ballet faculty member at the Ruth Page School of Dance, teaching Advanced/Professional level classes and Advanced Pointe and Variations since 2009.
John Atterberry
Ballet
A Chicago native, John started dancing at the age of 5. His formal training began at the Ruth Page School of Dance after first performing in their legendary Nutcracker at the age of 6. As one of the first members of the Ruth Page Civic Ballet, John had the privilege of working with many great choreographers, including the late Larry Long. John continued to dance for many companies and choreographers in and around the Chicagoland area while pursuing his degree in Electrical Engineering. He currently works for PolyScience as the Controls Project Leader. John has now joined the RPSD faculty, using his years of institutional knowledge to teach the next RPSD generation. He passes on the torch this year and adds to his resumé Children’s Director.
Elysia C. Banks

Elysia Christine Banks began her dance training at the Mayfair Academy of the Performing Arts. After seven wonderful years at Mayfair Academy, she trained at the Chicago Multicultural Dance Center before going on to graduate from Northern Illinois University in the spring of 2012 receiving a BFA in Dance Performance. Elysia trained on scholarship while at NIU under the direction of Autumn Eckman, Judith Chitwood, and Paula Frasz. After graduating, Elysia danced with Winifred Haun and Dancers from 2012-2014 and has worked collaboratively with WH&D on several productions since 2019. She took a hiatus to devote herself to motherhood, and after the birth of her son in August of 2015, she made her return to teaching in January 2016 and to choreography in June of the same year. Since 2016, Elysia has presented work at The Center on Halsted, Daley Plaza, Joffrey Tower, and at the Logan Center for the Arts as one of Deeply Rooted’s Emerging Choreographers in 2017.

Banks Performance Project was founded in Chicago, IL in January 2017 by Elysia C. Banks. BPP is a Southside based, contemporary Modern dance company that strives to create works that are honest, sincere, and authentic to real life experience. She and BPP have worked collaboratively with Collaboraction Studios since August 2017 and presented works at The Goodman, Hamilton Park, Millennium Park, and the Theatre on the Lake. Most recently, Elysia presented a work for Centre Stage 2023 at Ruth Page in March 2023. She is also a 2018 Chicago Dancemakers Forum Greenhouse Artist, receiving a grant to fund her continued growth as a dancemaker. Elysia C. Banks is thrilled to continue her artistic journey as a dancer, teacher, choreographer, mother, and Licensed Massage Therapist.

Julie Burman
Jazz
Julie Burman Kaplan (she/her) is a Chicago-based dancer, choreographer, educator, and arts advocate who has spent her career learning from, contributing to, and supporting the city’s vibrant dance community. A graduate of the University of Colorado with a degree in Dance and Arts Administration, she was awarded the Redmond Scholarship for Outstanding Achievement in Dance.

In 1980, Julie joined Hubbard Street Dance Chicago at the invitation of Lou Conte, performing nationally and internationally and teaching at the Lou Conte Dance Studio until 1986. She later founded River North Dance Studio and co-founded River North Dance Chicago, serving on its board for ten years. Since 1993, Julie has taught adult jazz at the Ruth Page Dance Center for the Arts as well as master classes nationwide. Her service to the field includes board membership with the Chicago Dance Health Fund and ongoing work with the Dance for Life Artistic Committee. Dance in Chicago is her heartbeat.
Katie M. Campana

Katie Matteson Campana is a dance educator and performing artist with 25 years of teaching experience and a lifelong passion for inspiring young people. Throughout her career, she has dedicated herself to helping students develop confidence, creativity, and a deep appreciation for the arts. Katie has taught ballet, jazz and modern to all ages, from professional company classes, pre-professional training schools, and the youngest of movers at the Chicago Park District. She has also worked with Chicago Public Schools as a choreographer for middle school and high school musical theatre productions. In addition to her work in the classroom, Katie’s performance career spans across the country and showcases her diverse training in modern, ballet, jazz, and musical theatre. 

Her commitment to education and performance informs her dynamic teaching style, where she blends technical skill, authenticity, and a genuine belief in the potential of every student. Katie currently serves on the board for Synapse Arts.
Mikala Curless
Jazz, Pilates
Mikala Curless is a global artist having danced in Spain, China, and Colombia. Her training spans across seven states and includes working under the direction of cruise ship choreographers, Muny performers, and international professionals from Cuba, Lithuania, Mexico, and Brazil. Notable instructors include Buddy & Susan Trevino, Debbie & Tracy Davenport, Chelsea Howell, Victor Alexander & Maray Gutierrez, and Bruce Stegmann. Mikala also trained on scholarship with Joffrey NYC and Nashville Ballet and has completed seven exam levels through the Cecchetti Council of America.

Her most recent freelance work includes dancing with Chicago Festival Ballet, Delve Dance, We Call It Ballet, and Ruth Page Center for the Arts. She has performed works by Steve Rooks, Kenny Ingram, Francisco Aviña, Adrián Marcelo Sáenz, Gus Giordano, and Noelle Kayser. Mikala is currently a Main Company Member with Ardent Dance and a Second Company Member with Cerqua Rivera Dance Theatre. In addition to her performance credits, Mikala is a certified Pilates Mat instructor, and an accomplished choreographer and director.
Marta Desanto
Pilates
Marta has been certified since 2000 through Romana’s Pilates and True Pilates of New York. She has had a life long passion for health and fitness, with a solid commitment to enhance the Joseph Pilates legacy. Avid golfer, swimmer and runner. A dedicated teacher to fitness enthusiasts of all levels. She is bi-lingual and received her BAS from Northeastern University.
Ariane Dolan
Jazz
Ariane has been dancing her whole life. Her early dance education began at The Academy in Oak Park Illinois, where she taught littles for work study. While at Whitney Young High School, she became a member of the Joseph Holmes Chicago Dance Theater, where she danced for eleven years. While at JHCDT, she taught Ballet, Jazz and Graham Technique, and for a time coordinated their scholarship program. After leaving JHCDT, she embarked on a career in Music Theater, performing in more than fifty musicals around the country. She taught Jazz, Ballet and Musical Theater Dance at the Lou Conte Studio from 1997 until it closed in 2020. She was Ballet Mistress to Cirqua Rivera for two years. She can be seen/not seen as Julia Stiles' Ballet Double in the film Save the Last Dance. A proud Member of AEA, SAG-AFTRA and AGMA, she had the honor to be a Tony Voter from 2010-2022. In addition to her classes at Ruth Page, she teaches Jazz, Ballet, and Music Theater Dance at Roosevelt University and Columbia College in Chicago.
Brian Enos

Brian Enos is an accomplished choreographer, movement coach, and teacher who has led master classes and workshops internationally and has been a guest teacher for many professional companies and educational institutions including: Royal New Zealand Ballet, Houston Ballet, Ballet Met, Oklahoma City Ballet, Nashville Ballet, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Ballet San Antonio, Grand Rapids Ballet, DanceWorks Chicago, Diablo Ballet, among others.

As a dancer, Enos danced professionally with The Houston Ballet and Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, where he has worked with and performed notable works by Ben Stevenson, William Forsyth, Jiří Kylián, Ohad Naharin, Nacho Duato, Twyla Tharp, Johan Inger, Jim Vincent, Lucas Crandall, and many more.
Olivia Gonzalez
Afro-Cuban, Modern/Contemporary
Olivia Gonzalez Raga is a professional dancer, choreographer, and teacher who graduated from the National School of Art in Havana, Cuba, in 2013. She began her training at the Afro-Cuban dance company JJ, where she completed her pre-professional practice. Upon graduation, Olivia spent four years dancing with Retazos Dance Theater, performing in festivals such as Habana Vieja Ciudad en Movimiento in Cuba, as well as international events in Canada, Uruguay, and the United States. She was also part of Transits – Havana, a global dance collaboration between Sweden and Cuba.

After relocating to Chicago in 2016, Olivia continued to expand her artistic career with Concert Dance, Inc. She joined Hedwig Dances in 2018, where she toured internationally to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Bauhaus, performing works inspired by the architectural style and The Triadisches Ballett by Oskar Schlemmer. During her time with the company, Olivia also taught Cuban-style modern dance at a summer intensive in 2019.

Olivia teaches contemporary and Afro-Cuban dance at the Ruth Page Center for the Arts and contributed choreography for the 2024 spring show. She was also part of The International Dance Experience summer intensive in 2021. Her Afro-Cuban choreographed piece for the adult program at Ruth Page was presented at See Chicago Dance. Olivia continues to teach and choreograph at the Ruth Page Center and collaborates with Hedwig Dances as a guest artist.
Maray Gutierrez
Modern/Contemporary
Maray Gutierrez is a native of Havana, Cuba where she trained at Escuela Nacional de Arte – the prestigious National School of Dance. For 10 years, her strength and powerful expression were revealed as a principal dancer for the internationally acclaimed Danza Contemporánea de Cuba. While in Cuba, she worked with many renowned contemporary and classical choreographers. As an international artist, Maray has performed professionally throughout Europe, the U.S., and the Caribbean. She has presented work at many festivals worldwide, including the American Dance Festival; The International Dance Festival in Berlin, Germany; The Holland Dance Festival; and the International Ballet Festival in Genoa, Italy.

Since relocating to Chicago, Maray has shared her unique energy and movement vocabulary on stage and in film. Luna Negra Dance Theater, CDI/Concert Dance Inc., the Lyric Opera of Chicago, and Hedwig Dances, where she was Artistic Associate for 14 years. She was a featured performer in the dance film, “Arch of Repose” produced by Hedwig Dances in 2009. Maray was also awarded an Emmy-nomination in 2008 for her performance in the PBS documentary of Ruth Page’s 1947 groundbreaking ballet cartoon, “Billy Sunday”, presented by CDI/Concert Dance Inc. Maray was awarded in 2021 with the 3Arts Make a Wave grant, and in 2022 received a Dance Leadership Award from Hedwig Dances.
Augustine Hardison

Augustine Hardison is a dancer, teacher, and outdoor enthusiast currently based in Chicago. She started dancing at the age of three at the Alaska Dance Theatre where she continued her dance education through high school training in Ballet, Acro, Contemporary, and Jazz/Broadway. Augustine is from Anchorage Alaska where she grew up exploring the outdoors which fostered her ongoing passion of bringing dance outside. After graduating from Towson University with her B.F.A. in dance performance and choreography she moved to Chicago to be a part of Ruth Page Professional Dance Training Program. She began her teaching journey at the studio she grew up in during her college summers and has taught multiple styles and age groups over the past five years.
Mari Jo Irbe Barker
BeMoved
Mari Jo, an accomplished performer, choreographer, rehearsal director and teacher, is originally from La Grange, Illinois, and has called Chicago "home" during much of her career. She has been a featured performer with River North Dance Chicago (RNDC), under the direction of both Sherry Zunker and Frank Chaves, for 15 years and continued on as rehearsal director for another 10 years. She has toured extensively, performing works by internationally acclaimed choreographers. Mari Jo also danced with the Lyric Opera of Chicago, and toured the United States and Mexico with Joseph Holmes Chicago Dance Theatre, under the direction of Randy Duncan. In addition to her extensive modern and jazz background, Mari Jo has been a guest artist with Especially Tap Co., under the direction of Bruce Stegmann. In 2001, MJ received the "Ruth Page Chicago and Music Alliance Dance Achievement Award". From August 2001 to April 2002, MJ danced for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines (RCCL) "Adventure Of The Seas" production cast, under the direction of Harrison McEldowney and Sherry Zunker.

Mari Jo continues to choreograph, and teach, extensively throughout the metropolitan area, nationally, and internationally. She is currently on faculty at Loyola University of Chicago and serves as the Dance Minor advisor for LUC’s dance department. Mari Jo is thrilled to be a “certified elite BeMoved® instructor”. (A dance fitness experience, designed by Sherry Zunker, for adults of all ages and skill levels).

Dr. Citlali Lopez-Ortiz

Dr. Citlali López-Ortiz is a dance scientist and neurorehabilitation researcher with formal training in classical ballet from the Ballet Academy of Coyoacán under Ana Castillo. The academy has served as a training ground for dancers who have gone on to perform with major professional companies in Mexico, the United States, and Europe. Her instructors included artists from leading institutions such as the Vaganova Academy, Paris Opera Ballet School, Cuban National Ballet, Royal Academy of Dancing, the Martha Graham and José Limón companies, Nikolais Dance Theatre, Garth Fagan Dance, and Ballet Folklórico de México.

Certified as a Classical Ballet Teacher, Dr. López-Ortiz helped develop an age-appropriate syllabus for students aged 5 to 18 and trained dancers for professional careers and international competitions. She has taught ballet and contemporary dance in conservatory and academic settings for over two decades. She served on the faculty of the Joffrey Ballet Academy and received a Ballet Teacher Certification from the Bolshoi Ballet Academy in 2015. She currently teaches at the Ruth Page School of Dance.

Dr. López-Ortiz holds a BS in Physics from UNAM, an MA in Dance (Kinesiology) from SUNY Brockport, and a PhD in Kinesiology (Biomechanics) from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Her NIH-funded postdoctoral research at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and Northwestern University focused on the pathophysiology of movement disorders. From 2014 to 2020, she served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Community Health at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, with affiliate appointments in Dance, Neuroscience, and Informatics. There, she founded the Neuroscience of Dance Lab, integrating motor learning, biomechanics, and dance to develop evidence-based neurorehabilitation protocols. Her research has been cited by the World Health Organization and the International Olympic Committee.
Melissa Metro
Hip Hop
Melissa Metro began her dance career in Philly where she received her BFA in Dance from the University of the Arts. Immersed in Philly’s hip hop scene, she was asked to dance for Illstyles and Peace Productions, a touring hiphop company. She was also privileged enough to dance with Smoke,Lilies and Jade, Archedream for Humankind and was trained by Clyde Evans of Chosen Dance. This is also the time she became certified in group ex and yoga, and began teaching in gyms, schools and corporate offices all over Philadelphia. Upon returning to Chicago she returned to Joel Hall, her first studio, guested with Chicago Dance Crash, Paul Sanasardo, Isabelle Collazzo  and Nicole Wood. She also entered multiple hiphop battles,  began  to teach various styles of hip hop and reinstated open breaking practices at Clerenden Park. She is now a founding member of The MetDown Dance Collective and the Uptown Rockers.

Dori Rothschild
Ballet
Dori Rothschild began her dance training with her mother, Joni Goldstein. At 8, she began dancing at the Ruth Page School of Dance. During her studies, she danced in Ruth Page’s The Nutcracker at Arie Crown Theater from 1989-1996, performing numerous roles in the production. She then finished her final two years of high school at the Houston Ballet Academy. Dori received her Bachelor of Science in ballet at Indiana University where she trained under Violette Verdy. Her professional career includes The Washington Ballet, Ballet Gamonet in Miami, Ballet Florida, Ballet Met, and the Warner Bros. “Casablanca, The Dance” tour to China with John Clifford. She is currently an instructor at the Ruth Page School of Dance as well as a private Gyrotonic instructor. Dori currently lives in Glencoe with her husband, Rob, and two daughters, Remi and Livi.
Julie Schiller
Pilates
Julie has been a certified instructor of Romana’s Pilates™ and True Pilates of New York™ since 1995. After receiving a BFA in Dance from the University of Illinois Champaign she danced professionally in New York and Chicago. Julie has been a faculty member at the Ruth Page Center for the Arts since 1994. She continues to study Pilates and the mechanics of the human body.
Anna Spelman
Ballet
Anna Spelman has been taking ballet classes at Ruth Page Center for the Arts since she toured Chicago for ten years as a member of American Ballet Theater. After moving from the east coast to Chicago with her young family of six, she continued to take classes and also teach ballet to instill in others the love for the art form. While teaching locally at the Faubourg School of Ballet, Plainfield Dance Academy, and Steps Dance Center, Ms. Spelman acquired her ABT National Teaching Certification. In 2020, YAGP awarded “Outstanding Studio” to the Chicago Ballet Conservatory where Ms. Spelman was an integral part of the ballet foundation. After the effects of the recent pandemic, Ms. Spelman was given the opportunity to continue to fuel her passion for dance as a ballet instructor at Salt Creek Ballet. Today, it is a great honor to be asked to join Ruth Page’s teaching staff, knowing that her beloved teacher Sonia Arova performed as Rudolf Nureyev’s ballerina in his American debut with Ruth Page’s Chicago Opera Ballet years ago.
Jumaane Taylor

Jumaane Taylor, a Chicago native, has been tap dancing since the age of 7 beginning at the Sammy Dyer School of the Theatre. He was part of the ensemble in Imagine Tap! (2006 directed and choreographed by Derick Grant); Tap Into Peace (2009 directed and choreographed by Sarah Savelli and Ayodele Casel); and Rasta Thomas' Tap Stars that showcased in Hamburg, Germany. In 2015 Jumaane created ‘Supreme Love’. A dance production honoring John Coltrane’s ‘A Love Supreme’ and the art of tap, premiering at jazz music and dance festivals including Jacob's Pillow in 2017. In 2018 he established The Jazz Hoofing Quartet to continue the progressive exploration of live improvisational music with tap. Jumaane has received the Black Excellence 2024 Outstanding Choreographer Award, 3Arts 2019 Award and Chicago Dancemakers Forum 2017 Lab Artist Award. Presented his work with the Hyde Park Jazz Festival, Museum of Contemporary Art, Jazz Institute of Chicago, Columbia College-Dance Center and abroad. He teaches at Mayfair Arts Center, Ruth Page School of Dance, and the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University. Since 2021 Jumaane has also been the artistic director of the Chicago Human Rhythm Project, directing their annual tap festival Rhythm World and continuing to be dedicated to the proper advancement of tap dance.
Tracy Vonder Haar

Tracy Vonder Haar, a former member of Hubbard Street Dance Company, has been teaching, choreographing, and directing for almost 60 years. In Los Angeles she taught at Los Angeles Valley College, L.A. Trade Tech College, Pasadena Civic Ballet, and served as artistic director of Vonder Haar Center for the Performing Arts for ten years. Tracy has been on the faculty at Webster College in St. Lous, and at Lou Conte Dance Studio, Ballet Chicago, and Joel Hall Dance Center in Chicago. She directed Chicago Studio for Dance and Musical Theatre, was artistic director of Dance and Company, served as dance coordinator for the Musical Theatre Department at Columbia College, and was a director of the children’s choir (in several cites) for the Canadian/National tour of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat starring Donny Osmond.

Tracy has choreographed and/or directed commercials, industrials, television shows, and musicals. She has written, produced, directed and/or choreographed over twenty full-length ballets, more than thirty musical theatre revues, and dozens of arts festivals and concerts. She served as a resident choreographer for five years in Yip’s Children’s Choir in both Los Angeles and Hong Kong, where her choreography was seen in more than two dozen countries. She continues her almost two decades as a member of the Ruth Page School of Dance faculty.
Eduardo Zambrano

EDUARDO ZAMBRANA is a company member with Giordano Dance Chicago. He received his training from The University of Arizona School of Dance triple-track program with equal emphasis in Ballet, Modern, and Jazz and received his MFA in Choreography and Performance. During his time as a graduate student, Eduardo was awarded the Creative Achievement Award in the College of Fine Arts, representing the School of Dance for demonstrating exceptional creativity and innovation with a passion for the arts. His choreographic commissions include original works for New Dances 2023 (IL), Simantikos Dance Chicago (IL), Ten Tiny Dances at Taliesin West (AZ) and Dance Kaleidoscope Spirit & Place Festival (IN). Eduardo has also presented his choreography at Giordano II (IL), Elpis Dance Festival IL), The University of Arizona, Breaking Ground Festival (AZ), SHFT at Tempe Center for Arts (AZ), Florence Dance On Screen (Italy), and Red Rock ScreenDance Film Festival (UT) where he was awarded Best Student Film in 2021.

Through his perseverance and dedication as an educator, he holds the distinction of being the only Bolivian worldwide certified at the Professional Level of the Nan Giordano Certification Program® and is committed to fostering growth in the Chicago’s dance community. Eduardo is honored to be part of Ruth Page School’s renowned faculty and strives to continue making significant contributions to the field of dance for years to come.
